Recordkeeping & Notification for Universal Waste Rule
As we have seen, the goal of the Universal Waste Rule is to streamline the management of universal waste to encourage its environmentally-responsible disposal, and to ease the burden of compliance on generators and other handlers of universal waste. To that end, recordkeeping and notification requirements are significantly less than those required for hazardous wastes that are not universal waste, and are as follows:
- Recordkeeping - Universal waste handlers must maintain records that report and prove annual accumulation quantities. For this purpose, it is preferable to use a tracking form. In some cases, shipping papers may be sufficient.
- Notification - Prior to accumulating 11,000 pounds of universal waste, universal waste handlers must notify the EPA using EPA Form 8700-12.
