Recycling Spent Rechargeable Batteries

Some batteries may be recycled. In our discussion about specific wastes in Unit 8, we learned that spent lead-acid batteries can be recycled to recover the lead. Other types of batteries, such as rechargeable batteries, may be recycled as well. The label of rechargeable batteries that may be recycled will carry the seal of the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC). This seal indicates that the battery or product can be recycled in a safe and responsible manner. The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, which is a nonprofit, public service organization, recognizes five categories of rechargeable batteries, as follows:

  • Nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd)
  • Nickel metal-hydride (Ni-MH)
  • Lithium-ion (Li-ion)
  • Small sealed lead (Pb)
  • Nickel zinc (Ni-Zn)
