Special Management Considerations for Batteries

Anyone who handles universal waste batteries must keep in mind some additional special management considerations. For example, if a handler removes electrolyte wastes or other solid wastes from batteries, the handler must determine if these wastes are hazardous. If they are deemed to be hazardous, the handler must manage the hazardous electrolyte waste and other solid wastes in a way that is compliant with federal, state, or local solid waste regulations. As discussed earlier in Unit 8 of this course, certain RCRA regulations are dedicated to the management of spent lead-acid batteries (refer to 40 CFR 266).
