Universal Waste Sites & Containers

Universal waste accumulation areas may include the following sites:

  • Custodial closets
  • Basements

To comply with the Universal Waste Rule, universal waste handlers must place universal waste in containers that meet each of a number of requirements, as follows:

  1. The container contents must be limited to one type of universal waste.
  2. The container must be labeled appropriately.
  3. The container must be compatible with the type of waste it carries.
  4. The container must be dated.
  5. The container must be kept closed.
  6. The container must be sturdy enough to reasonably prevent releases of toxic material should the contents spill or leak.
