What the Universal Waste Rule Does Not Do

In general, the regulations are less stringent for hazardous waste that is categorized as universal waste. These less stringent regulations apply to the following stages of hazardous waste management:

  • Storing
  • Transporting
  • Collecting wastes

However, the Universal Waste Rule does not give hazardous waste handlers a free pass to dispose of universal waste in any way they wish. It is also important to note that the rule does not apply to the following stages of hazardous waste management:

  • Final recycling
  • Treatment
  • Disposal

When it comes to these final stages of hazardous waste management, generators of universal waste must comply with the RCRA regulations.
