DIY Used Oil Guidelines

Generators of "do-it-yourself," or DIY, used oil are not subject to used oil regulations. Under RCRA regulations, once the used DIY oil is taken to a used oil collection center, the DIY used oil exemption ends. However, some activities may be subject to other state and federal laws. Some activities can result in serious violations. Generators of DIY used oil must be sure that they adhere to the following practices:

  • Do NOT mix used oil with antifreeze, other vehicle fluids, or hazardous waste.
  • Do NOT burn used oil in residential boilers or space heaters.
  • Do NOT pour used oil into sewers or storm drains.
  • Do NOT dump used oil on the ground, or use it for weed control or to keep dust down.

Generators of DIY used oil play an important role in helping prevent used oil from being released into the environment where it can pollute the air, water, and soil. The safest way to dispose of used DIY oil is to take it to a used oil collection center.

Do-it-yourself generators can locate a used oil collection center by doing the following:

  • Calling their town or city hall
  • Searching on the Internet, using terms such as "where to recycle used oil" (A link to one such resource is provided in the resources at the end of this unit.)

By disposing of DIY used oil by taking it to a collection center, generators of DIY used oil can avoid possible legal violations and help to protect the environment.
