Used Oil Burners
A used oil burner is a facility that burns off-specification used oil for energy recovery. In two situations, used oil burners do not have to comply with the RCRA regulations:
- The used oil is burned by the generator of the used oil in a space heater located on-site.
- The used oil is burned by a processor or re-refiner as part of the method of processing the used oil.
Off-specification used oil must be burned for energy recovery in approved devices, which include the following:
- Industrial furnaces
- Boilers
- Industrial boilers at manufacturing facilities
- Utility boilers used to produce electric power, steam, heated or cooled air, or other gases or fluids for sale
- Oil-fired space heaters
- Hazardous waste incinerators
- On-site space heaters that meet certain operating conditions
