Corrosivity Characteristic

A material is considered "corrosive" if it meets any of the following criteria:

  • It has a pH of 2 or less (which is more acidic than a lemon).
  • It has a pH of 12.5 or more (which is more basic than ammonia).
  • It can corrode steel at a rate of more than 6.35 millimeters per year at 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

For example, battery acid has a pH of 1.8, making it acidic enough to be corrosive. Chlorine is another corrosive chemical. It can eat through stainless steel, wood, and other materials.
