How to Determine if Material is Hazardous Waste

Handlers of hazardous materials can determine if the material is considered a hazardous waste by asking the following questions in the specific order shown:

  1. Is the waste material a solid waste?
  2. Is the waste material excluded?
  3. Is the waste material a listed waste?
  4. Does the waste material exhibit a characteristic (corrosivity, ignitability, toxicity, or reactivity)?

The questions are placed in the order shown because asking them in that order is the most efficient way to determine if a material is a hazardous waste.
