Other Materials Excluded from RCRA Regulations

Other materials are excluded from the RCRA regulations because the EPA excludes them from its definition of hazardous waste. A few examples of these materials are as follows:

  • Household hazardous waste (such as rat poison, house paint, solvents, pesticides, and fertilizer)
  • Agricultural waste (such as animal manure, slaughterhouse remains, and fertilizer run-off)
  • Spent chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are used as refrigerants and in the manufacture of aerosol sprays and foams
  • Used oil filters (such as those used in motor vehicles)

Many other materials are excluded, as well. These types of exclusions to hazardous waste regulations may be found in 40 CFR 261.4(b). In the additional resources for this unit, the link titled "Criteria for the Definition of Solid Waste and Solid and Hazardous Waste Exclusions" includes an easy-to-read list of the exclusions to solid and hazardous waste.
