Exports & Imports of Hazardous Waste
When a generator exports hazardous waste from the United States to another country, there are special requirements that must be met. Several key terms are central to understanding these requirements. Take a moment to review these terms.
Consignee refers to the ultimate treatment, storage, or disposal facility in the country that is receiving the hazardous waste.
EPA Acknowledgment of Consent is a cable sent to the EPA from the U. S. embassy in the receiving country. This cable confirms in writing that the receiving country is willing to accept the hazardous waste.
Primary exporter refers to the person who is first required to produce a manifest for a shipment of hazardous waste.
Receiving country refers to the country that is accepting the hazardous waste for the purpose of treatment, storage, or permanent disposal.
Transit country refers to a country through which the hazardous wasted is transported before it reaches the receiving country.
