Introduction

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) defines three basic roles for handlers of hazardous waste:

  • Generators (those who produce the waste)
  • Transporters (those who move the waste from the generator to the storage, treatment, or disposal facility)
  • Storage, treatment, and disposal facilities (those who receive and deal with the waste)

Some or all of these roles may be held by the same entity. However, each role requires that a different set of rules be followed when handling the hazardous waste. In this unit, we will discuss the general requirements for generators.
