Defunct National Environmental Performance Track Program

The EPA's National Environmental Performance Track program (referred to here as the Performance Track program) was a national program that recognized public and private facilities that demonstrated high environmental standards. This program was terminated in 2009. While the program was active, it included special rules that applied to Performance Track program member facilities (refer to 40 CFR 264.14[b][5]). To encourage participation in the Performance Track program, the EPA treated these facilities differently. The program provided the following benefits for Performance Track facilities:

  • Public recognition for demonstrating high environmental standards for the operation of their facilities
  • Regulatory and administrative benefits, such as the opportunity for a facility to apply for a reduction in the frequency of inspections
  • The opportunity for large-quantity generators to qualify for extended storage times for hazardous wastes

Keep in mind that although the RCRA regulations still make references to Performance Track facilities, the program no longer exists. A number of former Performance Track members have banded together to form the Stewardship Action Council (SAC). The main purpose of the Stewardship Action Council is to encourage collaboration and information-sharing about best practices for environmental stewardship.
