Groundwater Monitoring Requirements
Groundwater monitoring programs that are developed to satisfy the rules in 40 CFR 264, Subpart F, must adhere to a number of requirements, including the following:
- A sufficient number of wells must be installed at appropriate locations and depths to gather useful samples from the uppermost aquifer.
- If more than one regulated unit is present, monitoring systems must register all possible contaminants.
- To prevent contamination of both the samples and the groundwater from on-land contaminants, the well-hole itself must be properly protected.
- Specific testing procedures must be followed, controlled, and analyzed to ensure performance standards.
All groundwater monitoring data must be maintained in the facility operating record, and may be subject to review by the EPA regional administrator.
