Container Storage Areas for "Dry" Wastes

The requirements for containers that hold dry waste that does not contain free liquids are simpler than the requirements for containers that do contain free liquids. This is due to the lower potential for "dry" wastes to spread when a spill or leak occurs. Such containers must be stored in an area that is sloped or otherwise designed and operated to remove liquid from rain or other precipitation away from the storage area. It is also important that containers are elevated or otherwise prevented from sitting directly on a wet or moist surface.

The storage requirements are more stringent for the following "dry" wastes: F020, F021, F022, F023, F026, and F027. These waste codes indicate dioxin-bearing wastes. Dioxin and dioxin-like compounds are acutely toxic to human health and the environment. The storage area for containers of these dry dioxin wastes must have a secondary containment system. This containment system must be designed and operated in compliance with 40 CFR 264.175 (b). For more information, refer to the table of non-specific sourced wastes [the F list] in 40 CFR 261.31.
