Monitoring the Condition of Containers

It is important that all containers be in good condition. A generator or the owner or operator of a TSDF needs to inspect any area in which containers are stored at a minimum of once a week, and be on the lookout for containers that are leaking or deteriorating. If a container is severely rusted, dented, or crushed, or has started to leak, the owner or operator is required to remove the contents of the container. The contents can be transferred to another container that is in good condition, or managed in another acceptable way.

Containers with hazardous waste must always be closed during storage. The only exception is when the contents are being added to or removed from the container. The facility must ensure that the containers are always handled in a manner that will not lead to leaks or ruptures.
