Air-Eligible Packaging Requirements
A3.1.7 covers air-eligible packaging requirements, including:
- Combination of packaging pressure standard and inner receptacles and closures for holding hazardous liquid or semi-solid liquids (A3.1.7.1)
- Single and composite packaging pressure requirements for containing liquid hazardous materials (A3.1.7.2)
- Supplementary packaging containers and pressure requirements (A3.1.7.3)
Some types of packagings require valves and indicators to ensure safe transportation. For example, dry ice gives off a gas when it melts that could build up the pressure inside a container. These valves and indicators, with protective caps when required (for example relief valves, humidity indicators, leak indicators with adequate sensitivity to alert someone of imminent danger), must be installed in the shipping containers.
For a packaging containing a Packing Group III material with a subsidiary hazard of Class or Division of 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, or 8 must meet a Packing Group II performance level.
