Applicable Regulations for Transporting Lithium Batteries
As of April 1, 2016, lithium ion batteries packed by themselves must adhere to new regulations, including the following:
- Cells and batteries must be shipped at a state of charge (SoC) not exceeding 30 percent of their rated design capacity.
- Cells and batteries at a SoC of greater than 30 percent may only be shipped with the approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator under the written conditions established by those authorities.
- Cells and batteries are forbidden for transport as cargo on passenger aircraft unless shipped under exemption issued by all States concerned.
- Lithium metal cells and batteries shipped by themselves are forbidden for transport as cargo on passenger aircraft.
