Column 3 - Proper Shipping Name
You can use either singular or plural wording. New and revised PSNs in 49 CFR, part 172, ICAO, or IATA are authorized PSNs in this manual, provided the packaging requirements do not change.
Extra text (a modifier) can appear after the PSN, as lower case italicized letters that add description to the PSN; they are not required as part of the PSN. If a PSN has an "*" associated with it in column 1, you must provide the Technical or Chemical group name with the PSN.
For organic peroxides, use technical names listed below the appropriate generic PSN (in lower case letters) shown in Table A4.1 See A4.2.5 for more details.
If a hazardous material is a mixture or solution of two or more hazardous materials, enter the technical names of at least two components that contribute the most to the hazards of the mixture or solution in parentheses after the PSN.
In Table A4.1, the word "OR" in a sequence of PSNs means that the PSNs in that sequence are synonymous (or the same). You can use any one of the PSNs in the sequence - any are appropriate. However, select only one PSN when classifying the shipment.
The word "SEE" in the table indicates that one item references another item; if both names are in capital letters, use either name as the PSN. Forbidden designations and passenger restrictions applicable to the referenced entry also apply to the "SEE" entry.
A "MIXTURE" or "SOLUTION" containing a hazardous material, listed by name in Table A4.1, together with one or more materials that are not subject to this manual, must be identified using the PSN of that hazardous material. The appropriate word "MIXTURE" or "SOLUTION" should be added to the PSN.
When a PSN includes a concentration range as part of the description, the actual concentration shipped (if within the stated range) can be used instead of the concentration range given by the PSN description.
For example, if you have a hydrogen peroxide solution containing 30% peroxide, you can use "Hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution (with not less than 20 percent but not more than 40 percent hydrogen peroxide)" or "Hydrogen Peroxide aqueous solution (with 30 percent hydrogen peroxide)".
The PSN for a hazardous material that is a hazardous waste must include the word "WASTE" before the name of the material. For example: WASTE, ACETONE. Follow all requirements in this manual for shipping hazardous waste.
