General Guidance
Hazardous materials are articles or substances that are "capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported" and has been so designated by this manual, according to the glossary (Attachment 1) of AFMAN 24-604.
If not controlled, the hazardous properties of these articles and substances could adversely affect the safety of the crew, passengers, and or aircraft on which they are transported.
Depending on the severity of the hazard, any incidents caused by hazardous materials during air transport could also affect nearby communities and the environment.
Please note that the commercial shipping industry typically refers to hazardous materials as dangerous goods. Either phrase is acceptable when dealing with military aircraft shipments, but AFMAN 24-604 uses the term hazardous materials.
