HAZMAT Shipping Compliance
Hazardous materials must be prepared and shipped using UN specified containers, unless exempted by a specific packaging paragraph in this manual.
The DOD uses a program called Performance Oriented Packaging (POP) to locate tested and authorized DOD packaging configurations. If the hazardous material is provided by the manufacturer in a UN-specified container, that container can be used.
Compliance with all other requirements of the manual must be ensured, including air-eligibility.
For containers that require a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI), the designated UN specification container must be used.
If cargo is not correctly packaged and marked to UN specification requirements, it can cause issues and delays.
