Plastic Drums or Jerricans

The period of use permitted for transporting hazardous substances in plastic drums or jerricans is five years from the date of manufacture (listed on the specification markings). An exception is re-usable containers, which are marked with the minimum thickness of the packaging material according to 49 CFR 173.28.

For UN standard non-bulk packaging made outside the U.S., it can be used as packaging for transport on military aircraft as long as they are marked according to A14.2, when applicable, and all other requirements of this manual are met. Refer to A3.1.10 for more details.

Refer to A3.1.16 for information on empty containers, cylinders, and radioactive packages.
