Primary & Secondary Items and Containers

Primary and secondary items and their containers (unit or exterior) must protect against the following conditions, without deforming, leaking, or rupturing:

  • Temperature changes of -40° to 65.5° C (or -40° to 150 degrees° F)
  • Pressure changes through altitude variations (sea level to 3.7 km, or 12,000 ft.)
  • Pressure changes due to explosive decompression, from 3.7 km to 15.24 km (12,000 to 50,000 ft.)

Never overfill a UN specification packaging with a gross mass greater than the one marked on the packaging.

For materials susceptible to temperature extremes, provide adequate protection during both ground and air operations.
