UN Marking Code - V, W, X, Y, Z

Some packagings might use a code following the packaging code:

  • V, for Special Packaging that meets the tests specified in 49 CFR 178.601(g)(2).
  • W, for packaging of the same type as specified by the UN requirements, but do not meet the same general construction requirements. The transport of such packagings is subject to written approval from the competent authority (for approval, see 49 CFR 178.601(h)).

In Table A14.1, the example of X.14 or X15 is given. Here is the full explanation:

  • The letter X, Y, or Z to designate the packing group.
  • X indicates Packing Group I, which can be used for articles and substances for all packing groups.
  • Y indicates Packing Group II, which can be used for articles and substances for Packing Group II and III.
  • Z indicates Packing Group III, which can be used for articles and substances for Packing Group III only.
  • For single packagings that are intended to carry liquids, the relative density for which the container has been tested (rounded off to the nearest decimal) follows the Packing Group letter (example X1.4 is Packing Group I, relative density 1.4). This can be omitted if the relative density does not exceed 1.2
  • For packagings that are intended to contain solids or inner packagings, the Packing Group letter is followed by the maximum gross weight, in kilograms, for which the packaging configuration has been tested (example X15 is Packing Group I, max gross weight 15 kilograms).
