Driver (CDL) - Broken or Leaking Packages
Handle broken or leaking containers in transit using the safest practice available. You may repair these packages if it is safe to do so, or they can be forwarded to the destination or returned to the shipper in a salvage drum in accordance with the requirements of §173.3(c). Repaired packages may be transported to the nearest place where it can be disposed of properly if it meets the following requirements:
- The package is safe for transportation
- The package is adequately repaired so as to prevent coming in contact with other hazardous materials within the same vehicle
- The consignee's name and address must be plainly marked on the repaired package
- This only applies if the carrier himself is not the shipper
In the event any leaking package or container cannot be adequately repaired for transportation, it shall be stored in the safest manner possible.
