Driver (CDL) - Loading and Unloading

Hazardous materials must be loaded, blocked, braced, and unloaded in accordance with the regulations found in Subpart B of HMR §177.834. It is important to comply with the following general specifications to ensure safe transportation of these materials:

  • Hazardous materials not permanently attached to a motor vehicle must be secured in a manner that can endure normal transportation conditions, such as movement or shifting. Packages that contain valves or other fittings must be loaded in a manner that minimizes the likelihood of damage during transportation.
  • Packages containing package orientation markings must be loaded and remain in the correct position on a transport vehicle or within a freight container in accordance with the requirements found in HMR 172.312.
  • Tools that damage the effectiveness of the closure of a package or container are not permitted during loading or unloading.
  • Hazardous material must not be loaded to or unloaded from any motor vehicle unless the handbrake is securely set.
  • Reasonable care must be taken to prevent undue rise in temperature of containers and their contents during transit. There must be no tempering of containers or their contents between the starting origin to the billed destination.
