Driver (CDL) - Additional Motor Carrier Requirements
Section 177.816 also identifies specialized requirements for cargo tanks and portable tanks. In addition to being trained within the applicable requirements of 49 CFR Parts 390-397, each person who operates a cargo tank or vehicle containing a portable tank of 1,000 gallons must attain the appropriate State-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required by CFR Part 383. Specialized training includes the following:
- Understanding of emergency control features of cargo or portable tanks
- Special vehicle handling knowledge
- Loading and unloading procedures
- Retest and inspection requirements for cargo tanks
- Requirements for a CDL with a tank vehicle OR a hazardous materials endorsement
Your HAZMAT employer is required to determine the applicability of a CDL to the specific functions you perform, but recurrent training every three years is still required, regardless of the time your CDL is valid.
