Driver (CDL) - Training Programs
There is no prescribed training material, program, or test. Employers must determine a trainer's qualifications and develop a training test based on the employer's needs. The DOT does not approve, endorse, or certify any training programs. It is the responsibility of the employer to certify that the HAZMAT employee has been trained and tested. Testing can be a written test, a verbal test, a performance test, or a combination.
HAZMAT employees involved in transportation via highways must be trained as required by §172 Subpart H as well as the general compliance and testing for motor carriers covered in §177.800.
Section 177.816 of the HMR requires training that includes pre-trip safety inspection, use of vehicle controls and equipment, operation of vehicle, and procedures for maneuvering tunnels, bridges, and railroad crossings. This section mandates additional training and compliance with requirements found in FMCSR Parts 383 and Parts 390-397 (excluding §397.3 and §397.9).
