Driver (CDL) - Motor Vehicles in Emergency Situations

If a motor vehicle is required to stop during transit of hazardous materials, take special care to guard the vehicle and prevent further damage. However, except in an emergency, a transport vehicle containing a hazardous material may not be moved unless it displays all required markings, labels, and placards.

An improperly placarded or marked transport vehicle may be moved in an emergency only if escorted by a State or local representative, the motor carrier has permission from the USDOT, or movement of the transport vehicle is necessary to protect life or property.
