Exceptions for Small Lithium Cells or Batteries
Special provisions have been made for small sizes of lithium ion and lithium metal cells and batteries in order to simplify transportation procedures.
The exceptions for lithium ion cells and batteries are based on Watt-hour (Wh), which is a measurement used to indicate the energy capacity of a lithium ion cell or battery. These exceptions apply to lithium ion cells that do not exceed 20 Wh and lithium ion batteries that do not exceed 100 Wh. Each lithium ion battery that meets these requirements will be marked with the Wh rating on the outer case.
The size requirements for lithium metal cells and batteries are based on the weight of the lithium content. Lithium metal cells that do not exceed 1 g and lithium metal batteries that do not exceed 2 g qualify for these exceptions.
Cells and batteries that meet these size requirements are exempt from the requirements in Subparts C through H of Part 172.
