HMT - Column 1

Column 1, Symbols, contains up to of six symbols, or it may be blank. The six symbols designate specific transportation requirements, as follows:

  • The plus (+) sign fixes the proper shipping name, hazard class, and packing group for that entry without regard to whether the material meets the definition of that class, packing group, or any other hazard class definition. It means that the material is known to pose a risk to humans. For example, if Aniline (6.1), which has a + in column 1, did not meet the definition of a 6.1 toxic material, it would still have to be classified and described using the entry in the HMT.
  • "A" denotes a material that is subject to the requirements of the HMR when offered or intended for transportation by aircraft.
  • "D" identifies proper shipping names appropriate for domestic transportation but which may be inappropriate for international transportation under the provisions of international regulations (such as IMO or ICAO).
  • "G" identifies generic proper shipping names for which one or more technical names must be entered in parentheses, in association with the basic description.
  • "I" identifies proper shipping names that are appropriate for describing materials in international transportation.
  • "W" denotes a material that is subject to the requirements of the HMR when offered or intended for transportation by water (vessel).

Please note that hazardous substances and hazardous wastes are regulated in all modes of transportation.
