HMT
The Hazardous Materials Table, also referred to as the HMT, is the core of the HMR. The HMT lists, alphabetically, by proper shipping name, the materials that the USDOT has designated as hazardous material for the purpose of transportation. It provides the references to find information on requirements for shipping papers, package markings and labels, quantity limitations, vehicle placarding, and storage specifications.
The HMT is located in §172.101. It contains proper shipping names for over 3,000 substances commonly shipped or carried as hazardous material. The table is formatted in 14 columns with 10 major headings, numbered 1-10.
Anyone who works with HAZMAT must learn how to use the HMT in order to comply with the HMR.
Note that in 2017 the definition for specification packaging was deleted during a revision process. This has since been reinstated.
