Lithium Batteries - Packaging, Labeling, and Markings

If the lithium cells or batteries are not contained in equipment, then the package must be capable of withstanding a 1.2 meter drop test without:

• Damage to the cells or batteries
• Shifting of contents to allow cell-to-cell contact
• Release of the package contents

In addition, there can be no more than four lithium cells or two lithium batteries installed in the equipment. This restriction does not apply to button cell batteries installed in equipment.

Outer packages must be marked with "lithium metal" or "lithium ion" cells or batteries, as appropriate. In addition, the package must be marked and include documentation with the following information:

• Handle with care
• Flammable hazard exists if package is damaged
• Telephone number with additional information
• Indicate special procedures to be followed in the event of the package is damaged

Except when lithium metal cells or batteries are packed with or contained in equipment in quantities not exceeding 11 pounds (5 kg) net weight, the outer package that contains the lithium metal cells or batteries must be marked with one of the following:

• "Primary Lithium Batteries-Forbidden for Transport Aboard Passenger Aircraft"
• "Lithium Batteries-Forbidden for Transport Aboards Aircraft or Vessel"
• "Cargo Aircraft Only"

If the lithium cells or batteries are being transported by highway or rail only, the acceptable lithium content is increased:

• 5 g for a lithium metal cell
• 25 g for a lithium metal battery
• 60 Wh for a lithium ion cell
• 300 Wh for a lithium ion battery

The outer package must be marked with "Lithium Batteries-Forbidden For Transport Aboard Aircraft and Vessel.

The markings must meet the following size requirements:

• At least 0.25 inch (6 mm) on packages weighing 66 pounds (30 kg) or less
• At least 0.5 inch (12 mm) on packages weighing more than 66 pounds (30 kg)
