Marking, Labeling, and Placarding

Marking, labeling, and placarding are an essential part of the hazardous material communication requirements. Hazardous material packages must have the required marks and labels to communicate the hazards of that shipment to the people who may be exposed to the hazard, such as truckers and emergency responders. Marking, labeling, and placarding specifications can be found in the following sections of the HMR:

  • Marking - §172.300
  • Labeling - §172.400
  • Placarding - §172.500
