Hazardous materials are necessary commodities. They are an essential component of the U.S. economy and support our well-being and way of life. Hazardous materials fuel our cars, heat and cool our homes and offices, and are used in manufacturing, farming, medical applications, mining, and more. However, hazardous materials have the potential to be easily transformed into a terrorist weapon.

Millions of tons of explosive, corrosive, radioactive, flammable, and poisonous materials are transported in the U.S. every day. Shipments may range from several ounces to many thousands of gallons. These shipments can pose a significant threat if they are in the wrong hands. Therefore, security awareness is essential for carriers, shippers, and producers of hazardous materials.
