General awareness training is designed to provide familiarity with the requirements of the HMR and enable HAZMAT employees to recognize and identify hazardous materials using the hazard communication standards. All HAZMAT employees are required to receive general awareness training.

Function-specific training provides a detailed understanding of the HMR. Each employee must be trained on the specific functions they are required to perform, which will depend on the company operations and employee's responsibilities.

Safety training covers hazards presented by hazardous materials, safe handling procedures, emergency response information, and methods and procedures to avoid accidents. All HAZMAT employees must receive safety training, which will depend on the company operations and employee's responsibilities.

Security awareness training provides methods to enhance transportation security and methods on how to recognize and respond to possible security threats. All HAZMAT employees must receive security awareness training.

In-depth security training is required for all HAZMAT employees of an employer required to have a security plan. In-depth security training covers the company's security objectives, specific security procedures in place, actions to take in the event of a security breach, employee responsibilities, and the company's organizational security structure.
