Training

All HAZMAT employees who perform work functions subject to the HMR must be trained in accordance with the HMR. The requirements include initial training as well as periodic recurrent training of HAZMAT employees to ensure they maintain the required knowledge and skill sets. These requirements are found in Part 172, Subpart H of the HMR.

The specific areas of training that must be addressed include:

  • General awareness and familiarization
  • Function-specific
  • Safety
  • Security awareness
  • In-depth security, if a security plan is required
  • Additional training requirements specific to the modes of transportation prescribed in Parts 174-177, as applicable
