Fully Regulated Lithium Batteries

The guidelines for shipping fully regulated batteries are as follows:

  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped via ground or vessel must have a declaration or shipping paper enclosure.
  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that are packed with equipment and are shipped via ground or vessel must contain the battery and equipment in the same package. The battery must not be installed. The limit is dictated by the package closure instructions.
  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via ground or vessel must contain batteries installed in the equipment. A declaration or shipping paper must be enclosed in the package.
  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that contain no equipment and are shipped by air must not exceed a battery state of charge of 30 percent of rated design capacity. These batteries are forbidden for passenger air. The maximum net weight for cargo aircraft is 35 kilograms per package.
  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that are packed with equipment must contain the equipment and battery in the same package. The battery must not be installed.
  • Fully regulated lithium-ion batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must have batteries installed in the equipment.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped via ground and vessel must have a declaration or shipping paper enclosure.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are packed with equipment and shipped via ground or vessel must contain the battery and equipment in the same package. The battery must not be installed. The limit is dictated by the package closure instructions.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via ground or vessel must contain batteries installed in the equipment. A declaration or shipping paper must be enclosed in the package.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are not packed with equipment are forbidden on passenger aircrafts. On a cargo aircraft, the maximum net weight is 35 kilograms per package.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are packed with equipment and shipped via air must have the battery and equipment in the same package with the battery uninstalled. The maximum weight for a passenger aircraft is 5 kilograms per package, and the maximum weight for a cargo aircraft is 35 kilograms per package.
  • Fully regulated lithium-metal batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must have batteries installed in the equipment. The maximum weight for a passenger aircraft is 5 kilograms per package, and the maximum weight for a cargo aircraft is 35 kilograms per package.
