The increased use of lithium batteries is one challenge to consider when safely shipping lithium batteries. Lithium batteries fall into two broad categories - lithium-metal batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Even though many people use these common batteries, few people in the general public are aware that lithium batteries are considered to be dangerous goods and can pose a safety risk if they are not handled properly during the following processes:

Lithium batteries contain immense power in a small package, which accounts for their wide popularity. Because of so much power in such a compact device, fires and other dangers, such as explosions, can occur. In lithium-ion batteries, metal oxide, graphite, and lithium salts are the components that enable an electric charge to flow between two poles; if the often-thin barrier that separates these materials is breached, a short-circuit can occur, causing a fire or explosion.

To help maintain safety in air travel, given the popularity of lithium batteries on flights, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has developed information to guide those involved in the shipping and travel businesses, including the following:

• Freight forwarders
• Ground handlers
• Airlines
• Passengers

The IATA developed the seventh edition of the Lithium Battery Guidance for Operators in collaboration with various industry bodies, including leading industry groups specialized in the handling of dangerous goods. This updated edition helps explain the rules and regulations for the safe shipment of lithium batteries.
