Small Lithium Batteries

The guidelines for shipping small lithium batteries are as follows:

  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped using ground and vessel transport must not exceed 30 kilograms (a little more than 66 pounds) in gross weight.
  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are packed with equipment and are shipped using ground and vessel transport must be shipped in the same package with the battery uninstalled.
  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped using ground and vessel transport must contain no more than four cells or two batteries in equipment per package. The batteries must be installed in the equipment.
  • Small lithium-ion button cells that are contained in equipment and shipped using ground and vessel transport must be installed in equipment. There is no limit to the number of button cells installed.
  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped via air must not exceed 30 percent of the rated design capacity per package, the standard set in place for the design and size of the packaging. Only one package per consignment may be offered.
  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are packed with equipment and are shipped via air must not weigh more than 5 kilograms (11 pounds) per package. No more than the minimum number of batteries required to power the equipment, plus two spares, are permitted.
  • Small lithium-ion batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must not weigh more than 5 kilograms per package. No more than four lithium ion cells or two lithium ion batteries are permitted.
  • Small lithium-ion button cells that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must contain no more than 5 kilograms net quantity of button cells installed per package.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped via ground or vessel are limited to 30 kilograms of gross weight.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are packed with equipment and are shipped via ground or vessel must contain the equipment and battery in the same package with the battery uninstalled. The net weight of batteries per package should not exceed 5 kilograms.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via ground or vessel must not contain more than four cells or two batteries in the equipment per package. The batteries must be installed in the equipment.
  • Small lithium-metal button cell batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via ground or vessel must have the button cell installed in the equipment. There is no limit to the number of button cells installed, but the net weight per package must not exceed 5 kilograms.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are not packed with equipment and are shipped by air may contain only one package per consignment.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are packed with equipment and shipped via air must weigh no more than 5 kilograms per package. No more than the minimum number of batteries required to power the equipment, along with two spare batteries, are permitted. Equipment and batteries must be in the same package with the batteries uninstalled.
  • Small lithium-metal batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must contain no more than four cells or two batteries contained in the equipment per package. The batteries must be installed.
  • Small lithium-metal button cell batteries that are contained in equipment and shipped via air must be installed in equipment. There is no limit to the number of button cells installed, but the net weight of the package must not exceed 5 kilograms.
