Transportation Stipulations

Damaged, defective, and recalled batteries must only be transported by highway, rail, or vessel; air transport is prohibited. Additionally, the batteries must meet all of the following packaging requirements:

  • Each cell or battery must be placed in individual, non-metallic inner packaging that completely encloses the cell or battery.
  • The inner packaging must be surrounded by cushioning material that is non-combustible, non-conductive, and absorbent.
  • Each inner packaging must be individually placed in the following packaging: metal, wooden, or solid plastic box; metal, plywood, or plastic drum.
  • Single batteries or single batteries contained in equipment must be packaged in large, rigid packagings of metal, rigid plastic, or plywood.
  • Outer packages must be marked with an indication that the package contains a "Damaged or defective lithium ion battery" or a "Damaged or defective lithium metal battery," as appropriate. The marking must be in characters that are at least 12 millimeters (0.47 inches) high.
