Railroad HMR
Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 100 through 185, govern the transportation of hazardous materials. The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) are found in Subchapter C, Parts 171 through 180. All US railway carriers must comply with the 49 CFR requirements governing the acceptance, storage, loading, and transportation of hazardous materials by rail. Everyone involved in the transportation of hazardous materials must be familiar with, and have current knowledge of, the HMR.
The Codes of Federal Regulations are structured by title, subtitle, chapter, subchapter, and parts. Part 174 is specific to the transportation of HAZMAT through carriage by rail. In addition to understanding general HAZMAT requirements, which are covered in the HAZMAT General Awareness and Security Training course, rail carriers and shippers must comply with additional regulations listed under Part 174, as well as adhere to tank car specifications within Part 179.
