Railroad - Exceptions Hazardous Materials
A railroad transporting its own supplies of HAZMAT must meet all other requirements of the HMR, although a shipper's certification is not required on the shipping paper when a railroad is transporting its own supplies. The requirements of the HMR do not apply to railway torpedoes or fusees when carried in rail engines or rail cars. Railway torpedoes must be in closed metal boxes when not in use.
Additional Restrictions
Additional restrictions apply to "key trains" and include the following trains:
- Trains with five tank car loads of Poisonous by Inhalation materials.
- Trains with 20 or more loaded cars, trailers, containers and intermodal tanks carrying a combination of: Division 2.3 and 6.1 Zone A or B Poisonous by Inhalation materials; Division 1.1 and 1.2 Explosives; Division 2.1 Flammable Gases; and certain environmentally sensitive chemicals.
