Railroad - Subpart A
The requirements listed under 49 CFR Part 174 Subparts A-K apply to the offering, acceptance, and transportation of hazardous materials in or on rail cars, and prescribes requirements in addition to those contained in Parts 171, 172, 173, and 179.
Hazardous materials must not be accepted, offered, or transported by rail if it does not meet the requirements within 49 CFR Part 174. Any state, local, or Indian tribe requirement regarding HAZMAT by rail may be preempted under either 49 U.S.C 5125 or 20106.
Subpart A covers general requirements for transporting HAZMAT via rail, including inspection of shipments, expedited movements, hazardous materials dispositions, and exceptions to these general rules.
