Cargo Acceptance - Introduction

According to the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), dangerous goods are "articles or substances that are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment." The International Air Transport Association (IATA) publishes the DGR to provide shippers and operators with procedures to safely transport articles and substances with hazardous properties by air.

General cargo acceptance personnel may come in contact with dangerous goods during transport. It is important that they are aware of potential hazards and safe acceptance procedures.

Many dangerous goods can be transported safely by air if the articles or substances are packed properly and quantities are limited. However, if they are not controlled, the hazardous properties of these dangerous goods could adversely affect the safety of the crew, passengers, or aircraft on which they are transported.
