Cargo Acceptance - UN Specification Markings

Packaging specification markings are those that identify the design or specification of a packaging, regardless of its use for a particular shipment. Packages that require UN specification markings are subject to performance tests to ensure that the package is properly designed to adequately contain its contents under normal conditions of transport. The type and severity of the performance tests are dependent on the degree of danger of the intended contents.

These markings are usually applied by the manufacturer or the authorized testing institute but are ultimately the responsibility of the shipper. Packaging specification markings are not required for limited quantity packages.

All packagings that meet UN specifications must bear durable, legible, and appropriately sized and placed markings. The UN specification packaging marking must consist of the following:

  • The UN packaging symbol
  • The code number designating the types of packaging (DGR 6.0.3)
  • The packing group designator
    • X indicates Packing Group I (This packing group has the strictest requirements and can be used for articles and substances in any packing group.)
    • Y indicates Packing Group II (This can be used for articles and substances in Packing Group II or III.)
    • Z indicates Packing Group III (This can be used for articles and substances in Packing Group III only.)
  • The maximum permitted gross weight
  • A number that indicates the hydraulic test pressure, shown in kPa, for liquids, or the letter "S" for solids and inner packagings
  • The last two digits of the year in which the packaging was manufactured
  • International Vehicle Registration Code (VRI), which indicates the State authorizing the mark
  • Manufacturer's name or other identifying mark
