IATA Cabin Crew & Passenger Security - Handling Labels
Certain dangerous goods require handling labels in addition to the hazard label because they need to be handled or loaded in a particular manner.
The following handling labels may be required, as indicated in subsection 7.2.4:
- Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO) labels are required for all packages containing dangerous goods that are permitted only on cargo aircrafts. Affix them near the hazard label on the same surface of the package.
- Cryogenic Liquid labels are required for all packages and overpacks containing cryogenic liquids in addition to the Non-flammable Gas (Division 2.2) hazard label.
- Package Orientation labels are required to be used on combination packaging and overpacks containing liquid dangerous goods, with exceptions. When these are need, two should be used (one label affixed to each of two opposite sides.
- Keep Away From Heat labels are required on all packages and overpacks containing self-reactive substances in Divisions 4.1 and 5.2. Apply this label in addition to the applicable hazard label. Protect these packages from direct sunlight and all sources of heat and place them in well-ventilated areas.
- Magnetized Material labels are required for all packages and overpacks containing magnetized material.
- Lithium Batteries labels are required on all packages containing lithium batteries that meet the requirements of Section IB of Packing Instruction 965 and 968 and Section II of Packing Instructions 965 to 970.
- Battery-powered Wheelchairs or Mobility Aids labels indicate whether or not the battery has been removed from a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid. The label is in two parts. Part A remains with the wheelchair. If the battery has been removed, Part B is attached to the battery to reconcile the battery and its wheelchair.
- Excepted Quantities labels must be affixed to any package containing dangerous goods in excepted quantities.
- Radioactive Material, Excepted Package labels are required on all excepted packages of radioactive material.
- Environmentally Hazardous Substances labels are affixed to packages containing environmentally hazardous substances as specified by DGR 7.1.5.3.
- The Limited Quantity marking must be displayed on packages packed in accordance with the limited quantities provisions.
- The UN 3373 label must be affixed to all packages containing biological substances, category B, and packed in accordance with Packing Instruction 650.
- The UN 3245 label must be affixed to all packages containing genetically modified organisms and packed in accordance with Packing Instruction 959.
