IATA Cabin Crew & Passenger Security - Marking & Labeling

Correct marking and labeling is important within the safe transport process. Packages containing dangerous goods are normally identified with specific marking and special hazard labels intended to alert you to the risks inherent in the contents. Markings and labels fulfill the following purposes:

  • Indicate the contents of the package
  • Indicate that the packaging meets approved standards
  • Provide safe handling and storage information
  • If applicable, indicate the nature of the package's hazard(s)

The shipper is responsible for the correct marking and labeling of the packages for transport.

The cargo agent, freight forwarder, and operator's dangerous goods acceptance staff are required to check and make sure that all packages are correctly marked and labeled before accepting them.
