Flight Crew & Load Planner - Battery-powered Wheelchairs and Mobility Aids - Operator Verifications
Prior to loading a battery-operated wheelchair or mobility device, the operator must verify that the battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid, the battery terminals are protected from short circuits, and that all electrical circuits have been inhibited.
Most mobility devices have a key which can be switched off, removed, and given to the passenger for safekeeping. If the device has a push button power switch, it could be inadvertently activated during transport. Therefore, additional steps are required to ensure that circuits are inhibited. This may be accomplished by separating the power supply between the batteries and control mechanism by disconnecting cable plugs or inserting an inhibiting plug.
Operators can check that electrical circuits have been inhibited by attempting to power up the device. If a mobility device has not been made safe for transport, it must be unloaded from the aircraft.
