Flight Crew & Load Planner - Cargo Aircraft Only

When packages or overpacks of dangerous goods with CAO labels are loaded on cargo aircraft, at least one of the following provisions must be met:

  • The cargo aircraft compartment meets Class C requirements.
  • A unit load device is used and is equipped with a fire detection or suppression system equivalent to a Class C cargo aircraft compartment.
  • A crew member or authorized person can access and handle the dangerous goods as necessary in the case of an emergency.
  • An external carriage is used by a helicopter.
  • For helicopter operations, approval is provided by the State of the operator.

CAO provisions are not required for the following dangerous goods:

  • Flammable liquids in Packing Group III, unless they have a Class 8 subsidiary risk
  • Toxic substances with no subsidiary risks other than Class 3
  • Infectious substances
  • Radioactive materials
  • Miscellaneous dangerous goods

When requested, CAO packages should be made available to the crew for inspection prior to departure.
